GYG Calorie Swaps: 6 Menu Changes That Save 114–445 Calories

Six real swaps from the GYG nutrition data, from bowl instead of burrito to two tacos instead of a burrito, with the exact calories each one saves.

Most GYG calorie advice stays vague: "skip the sour cream", "go light on cheese". The menu data lets us be specific, because many items exist in two or three sizes and formats. Swapping between them is a measurable saving, not a guess.

The six swaps below are all built from published item-to-item differences, using grilled chicken as the example filling. Every number matches what you will see in the full GYG menu and the calorie calculator. For a list of ready-made lighter meals, the GYG under 500 calories page is the shortcut.

Swap 1: nachos for a bowl saves 445 Cal

The biggest single move is leaving the corn chips and extra cheese behind. Grilled chicken nachos are 1,100 Cal against 655 Cal for the Grilled Chicken Bowl, a drop of 445 Cal. Protein barely changes (52.2 g to 43.7 g).

Swap 2: regular burrito for a mini saves 318 Cal

The Mini Burrito - Grilled Chicken is 451 Cal against 769 Cal for the regular. You lose about 21.7 g of protein along the way, so pair it with extra chicken if protein matters. The regular vs mini burrito comparison sets the two side by side.

Swap 3: Cali burrito for a regular burrito saves 193 Cal

The Cali version stuffs chipotle fries inside the tortilla. The Grilled Chicken Cali Burrito is 962 Cal and 50.3 g of fat, against 769 Cal and 23.4 g for the standard burrito. See the Cali vs regular burrito breakdown for the full macro gap.

Swap 4: bowl instead of burrito saves 114 Cal

Dropping the flour tortilla takes 114 Cal off every filling on the menu, and about 16.9 g of carbs. The burrito vs bowl comparison walks through what you give up, which is mainly the portability.

Swap 5: grilled chicken instead of shiitake saves 126 Cal

The mushroom filling is vegetarian, but it is more energy-dense: 895 Cal for the shiitake burrito against 769 Cal. If you want to stay vegetarian, the sautéed vegetable burrito at 804 Cal is the lighter route, and the vegetarian GYG menu lists the rest.

Swap 6: two soft tacos instead of one burrito saves 385 Cal

One soft flour chicken taco is 192 Cal, so two come to 384 Cal against 769 Cal for a burrito, with about 31.6 g of protein. Tacos also let you stop at one or two depending on appetite, which a rolled burrito does not.

Small tweaks: rice, beans, spice and add-ons

Smaller changes add up more slowly. Brown rice instead of white takes about 14 Cal off a burrito and 22 Cal off a bowl, according to the published modifier figures, and adds a little fibre. Pinto beans instead of black beans add 35 Cal and about 2.8 g of protein, a swap to make for protein, not for calories. Making an item spicy adds about 17 Cal to a regular item.

Add-ons are where calories sneak in. A medium guacamole side is 237 Cal, a side of sour cream 163 Cal, and a chipotle mayo dip about 214 Cal. A pico de gallo portion is only 3 Cal, so salsa is the cheap way to add flavour.

How these swaps stack up against a daily calorie target

Combining swaps is where the saving becomes meaningful. A mini bowl with extra chicken is about 551 Cal, against 1,100 Cal for the nachos, which is nearly half. If you are tracking energy in kilojoules instead, every item page shows both, and the kJ to Cal converter on the calculator page does the maths. 119 of 245 menu items are under 500 Cal, so a lighter order is easy to find without custom changes.

This is general information from published menu data, not personal dietary advice. If you have a medical condition or a specific target, check it with a dietitian or doctor.
