"Is GYG healthy?" has no single answer, because the menu spans more than 1,000 Cal between its lightest taco and its heaviest enchilada. What matters is which items you order, how often, and what else you eat that day.
This is a data-led look at the menu, not a verdict from a health professional. We read the published nutrition panel for all 245 items and highlight where the numbers are good, where they are not, and which choices change the picture most. You can check any figure in the full menu or the calorie calculator.
What GYG gets right: fibre, protein and portion options
Beans and vegetables give many items a solid fibre count: the Grilled Chicken Burrito has 6.8 g, and the shiitake bowl reaches 15.9 g. Protein is strong across the burritos and bowls, 48.2 g in the chicken burrito. And unusually for fast food, most items come in more than one size: 119 of 245 menu items are under 500 Cal, including all of the tacos and every mini bowl.
Light options that still count as a meal
The Mini Bowl - Grilled Chicken is 407 Cal with 24.2 g of protein, the grilled chicken quesadilla is 458 Cal with 29.8 g, and the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad is 579 Cal. See the low calorie GYG menu for the full list.
Vegetarian and vegan choices
Vegetarian items are common (117 of 245), though most are sides, fries and breakfast variants. Fully vegan items are fewer (31), and the main meals mostly contain cheese. The vegan GYG guide and vegetarian GYG guide list them.
Where the nutrition data raises flags: sodium and energy density
Sodium is the clearest issue. The Grilled Chicken Burrito has 1,880 mg, close to a full day's worth against the 2,000 mg figure often used as a reference. The enchiladas are far higher: the Grilled Chicken Enchilada (with Cheese & Queso) is 3,090 mg, and the shiitake enchilada reaches 3,530 mg.
Energy density is the second flag. Nachos range from 1,010 Cal to 1,230 Cal, the Cali burritos from 871 Cal to 1,160 Cal, and the Big Brekkie Burritos approach 1,000 Cal. These are heavy single meals and read like a full day's allowance for some people.
Which items are the heaviest?
The enchiladas are the heaviest category on both calories (1,130 Cal to 1,270 Cal) and sodium, followed by nachos and Cali burritos.
How to order a healthier GYG meal
Three changes do most of the work: choose a bowl over a burrito (114 Cal lighter), pick grilled chicken or brisket for the protein, and step down to a mini if you are not very hungry. The GYG calorie swaps guide puts exact numbers on each change.
Our numbers come from published information and may differ by store, preparation or recipe changes. Treat them as a very good estimate. The disclaimer explains the limits, and anyone with allergies should check the allergen guide and ask the restaurant directly.
So, is GYG healthy?
It can be, depending on the order. A bowl with grilled chicken, beans and fresh salsa is a high-protein, high-fibre meal at 655 Cal. A family fries and a Cali burrito is not. The honest answer is that the menu supports both, and the data lets you choose.
Quick ordering checklist
Best everyday choices: bowls, mini bowls, soft tacos and grilled chicken Caesar salad.
Eat less often: enchiladas, nachos, Cali burritos and Big Brekkie Burritos.
Watch sodium: bowl 1,620 mg, burrito 1,880 mg, enchilada 3,090 mg.
Add fibre and protein with beans and extra grilled chicken, not creamy dips.
Allergies: check the allergen matrix first and confirm with the store.
