How to compare GYG nutrition properly
The trap with menu comparisons is comparing different amounts. A taco and a burrito are not the same serve, so look at calories and protein together, then work out protein per 100 Cal if you want a fair comparison. A single taco is about 190 Cal and a burrito about 770, so two tacos are the closer match.
The other trap is judging by one number. A Cali burrito has fewer carbs and less sodium than a regular burrito but far more fat, which is why the Cali vs regular burrito page shows every nutrient and not just the headline calorie count.
Which nutrient should you look at first?
That depends on the goal. For weight loss, calories and serve size. For muscle gain, protein and calories together, as in the high-protein guide. For blood pressure or a low-salt diet, sodium, because mains range from under 500 mg for a taco to over 3,000 mg for an enchilada. For low-carb eating, carbs minus fibre, covered in the low-carb guide.
Where the numbers come from
All figures are the published nutrition panel for each item, the same data used by the GYG calorie calculator. See the methodology page for the source and its limits.
Comparing GYG items: common questions
How do I compare two GYG items?
Pick two items in the compare tool above. It shows calories, kJ, serve size, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbs, sugars, fibre and sodium side by side, and how far apart each one is.
Which GYG comparison is the most useful?
Burrito against bowl is the most common, because the difference is the same 114 Cal on every filling. Regular against mini is the next, because it shows the biggest saving for the least change.
Are the compared numbers per serve?
Yes. Every figure is for one standard serve of the item as listed, so a single taco is compared with a single taco, not with a tray of three.
